About
The story of icon.la
ICON, deconstructed is a single-purpose website with one job: take the most overused word on the internet apart, letter by letter, and see what is actually inside it. No product, no feed, no sign-up form. Just a scroll, a sunset, and four letters.
The idea
The word icon gets attached to everything now — a logo, a sneaker, a celebrity, a button on a screen. This page slows the word down. You begin by looking at a Los Angeles dusk through the letterforms themselves, dive through the O into the open sky, watch the word re-form, and then see it come apart into the four qualities every real icon shares: Immediate, Cultural, Original, Now. Deconstruction here is a close reading of the word, not a demolition of it.
Why Los Angeles
The address is a domain hack — icon plus .la — and .la is Los Angeles, the most icon-dense city on earth. The fan palm, the graded sunset, the downtown silhouette: the icons of Los Angeles are so widely recognized they work as the world's shorthand for glamour. If you are going to study what makes an icon, LA is the laboratory.
How it is made
The site is built with Next.js. Every visual — the gradient sky, the setting sun, the hills, the skyline, the palms — is hand-drawn CSS and SVG. There are no photographs, no stock art, no cookies, and no trackers. The typography is Anton for display and Inter for text. Because the whole page weighs less than a single hero image on most websites, it loads fast on a phone at the beach or a laptop in a café.
What is next
ICON keeps growing. New typographic experiments land at this address first — the domain is the studio. The domain itself is also for sale: the button on the home page goes straight to GoDaddy. And if the page made you feel something, the kindest thing you can do is send www.icon.la to someone who would get it.
